Etnies was founded in 1986 by Pierre Andre Senizergues, a champion international freestyle skateboarder who had moved to California in 1985 from his native France. In collaboration with the French company Rautureau Apple, Etnies—its name a play on “ethnics,” referring to the tribal subculture of skateboarders—began to create and market outstanding-quality high-tops specifically designed for skaters and surfers.
