Etnies was founded in 1986 by Pierre Andre Senizergues, a champion international freestyle skateboarder who had moved to California in 1985 from his native France. In collaboration with the French company Rautureau Apple, Etnies—its name a play on “ethnics,” referring to the tribal subculture of skateboarders—began to create and market outstanding-quality high-tops specifically designed for skaters and surfers. That commitment continues to this day, with top competitors from around the world lending their names and reputations, and trusting their feet, to the Etnies brand.
